Tenacatita Whale and Dolphin Watching

19° 17.4′ N · 104° 49.8′ W · approximate

Humpback whales, including mothers with calves, pass close along the Costalegre in winter, and dolphins work the anchorages — one notched-fin dolphin famously scratched its back on anchor chains in Tenacatita.

Practical

Position approximate: the mouth of Bahía Tenacatita. Cruiser reports describe a mother and calf in the bay and a whale strike just outside the anchorage (March 2011) that damaged a 36 ft boat's rudder and shaft. Slow down and keep a lookout when entering and leaving bays in winter; give whales a wide berth.
