Isla Contoy Visitor Permit

21° 15.4′ N · 86° 44.8′ W · approximate

Every visitor to Isla Contoy National Park needs a CONANP permit and the island takes only 200 people a day, nearly all of them on licensed tour boats from Isla Mujeres and Cancún - so a private-yacht visit needs arranging before you sail.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: downtown Isla Mujeres waterfront, where the park office and the Contoy tour operators are based (exact office location not verified). Wikipedia and EcuRed: permits are requested at the national park offices in Cancún or Isla Mujeres. Sources conflict on private boats: hotel/travel guides say visits are only via CONANP-authorized tours, others that a permit for your own boat can be obtained in advance on Isla Mujeres - ask CONANP (Dirección Regional Península de Yucatán y Caribe Mexicano, Cancún) before going. No overnight stays; day visits only, typically 9:00 am to about 5:00 pm. Fee amount for 2025-2026 not verified - verify locally. The park's 1997 management program sets the formal process: local boat owners apply at the park office at least two days ahead, and foreign-flag boats may arrive and ask the guards on duty. Non-commercial visits only; an overnight aboard of up to three days needs the director's prior authorization. See Isla Contoy Anchorage (Playa Tortugas Visitor Dock).
