Hurricane Season (Costalegre)
19° 24.0′ N · 104° 54.0′ W · approximate
The Costalegre sits squarely in the eastern North Pacific hurricane belt: Hurricane Jova came ashore near Barra de Navidad as a Category 2 in October 2011, and Hurricane Patricia, one of the most intense hurricanes ever measured, made landfall near Cuixmala as a Category 4 in October 2015.
Practical
Position approximate: representative point off the Cuixmala-Careyes coast. The official eastern North Pacific season runs May 15 to November 30 (see Mexico area file). Jova (Oct 12, 2011) closed the port of Manzanillo, washed out bridges and caused deadly mudslides in Cihuatlán; Patricia (Oct 23, 2015) flattened the hamlet of Chamela, stripped hillsides near Emiliano Zapata and drove the bulk carrier Los Llanitos ashore near Barra. The Barra lagoon is the most enclosed water on this coast but is shallow, crowded and silty — not a recognized hurricane hole. Most cruisers leave the coast or haul out elsewhere by June. Tsunami warnings (March 2011) have also sent the Chamela fleet to sea.
