The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs May 15 to November 30, and Los Cabos lies in the path of storms curving north-west from the Gulf of Tehuantepec - Hurricane Odile (Category 4, 2014) did more than US$1 billion in damage at Cabo San Lucas.

Practical

Pin placed at Cabo San Lucas harbor. NOAA: most eastern Pacific storms form between late June and early October with a peak in late August; an average season has 15 named storms. Mariners treat August-October as the danger months; storms have struck from mid-May to late December (Ha-Ha guide). Insurance usually allows boats south of Ensenada only from November 1. Cabo's outer anchorage is wide open to the south. Refuges cited by The Log: Man of War Cove, Puerto San Carlos and Belcher's Point in Mag Bay; Puerto Cortés (Navy pier, call VHF 22); Cedros village harbor (raft against shrimpers); Hassler's Cove at Isla San Martín; Cruiseport Village and Marina Coral in Ensenada. Turtle Bay is not a hurricane hole. Hurricane Hilary hit San Quintín in 2023. From June 1 every Mexican port captain broadcasts tropical-storm bulletins at 8 am on VHF 16 and 22. Many boats haul out (e.g. Marine Group Boat Works dry storage) or Bash north to Ensenada before June.
