Holbox Fly Fishing (Tarpon and Snook)

21° 30.3′ N · 87° 20.4′ W · approximate

Holbox is a well-known saltwater fly-fishing destination: baby tarpon and snook all year in the mangrove lagoons and creeks behind the island, and big migratory tarpon of 75-190 lb rolling in calm water off the island in summer.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: a representative point in Yalahau Lagoon behind the village. Seasons (Aardvark McLeod): migrating tarpon start arriving in April and are present May-September, best June-August; baby tarpon (5-15 lb) and snook year-round; occasional bonefish, permit, jacks and barracuda in spring and summer. Local guides pole skiffs on the flats and in the mangroves - Holbox Tarpon Club (founded 1997, 12 boats in a 2012 report) and Viva Fly Fishing operate from the island; check current details. Every angler needs a Mexican fishing permit; much of the area is inside the Yum Balam protected area.
