Holbox Village

21° 31.4′ N · 87° 22.7′ W · approximate

A car-free fishing village of sand streets, painted murals and golf carts on the 40 km barrier island of Holbox, with about 50 restaurants serving lobster pizza and fresh ceviche around the main plaza.

Practical

Coordinate is the OpenStreetMap node for the Plaza Principal. Wikivoyage picks: Los Peleones (central square, 4:30 pm-11:30 pm), El Hornito Argento (lobster pizza, noon-11:00 pm), Las Panchas (8:30 am-6:00 pm, grilled fish), La Serenita (antojitos), Arte Sano (vegan). No banks; ATMs are unreliable (city-hall ATM reported closed Aug 2023; CIBanco on the main street) and some only give US dollars; shops add 3-5% card fees - bring pesos. Lobster has a closed season. Ferries cross from Chiquilá in about 20-30 minutes every half hour, 6:00 am-9:30 pm (MXN 220-330, 2025 - verify locally). The island is sometimes evacuated in hurricanes; a February 2024 cold front flooded the plaza.
