El Mogote Anchorage (Inside the Mogote)

24° 9.8′ N · 110° 19.8′ W · approximate

The quieter Mogote side of La Paz harbour, anchored off the long sandy spit across the channel from the city - flatter water when the Coromuel blows, a beach to walk the dog on, and the occasional cruiser potluck ashore.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: a water point about 200 m off the Mogote shore, placed between Club Cruceros' waypoint Green B (24°09.934'N 110°19.524'W, north-channel entrance) and the submerged wreck Beyond (24°09.950'N 110°19.643'W, 50 m off the cross at the east end of the Mogote) and the Tabasco II wreck farther west; no published anchor fix. Club Cruceros' La Paz anchoring map lists 'The Mogote' and 'The Sandbar' as separate anchoring areas: reach the Mogote side only via the connecting channel (Green A 24°09.802'N 110°19.356'W to Green B) - never cross the sandbar elsewhere - and anchor between the channels, not in them. No-anchor zones: the main channel, the connecting channel, and the Mogote-side north channel from Green B to the ASIPONA (ex-Fonatur) marina. Submerged hazards: Beyond, Seascape (75 m south of Beyond), Tabasco II (24°09.418'N 110°20.562'W, 50 m off the beach) and the old steam wreck (24°09.146'N 110°20.329'W). The Log lists El Mogote as a Coromuel (south-wind) shelter on the way into La Paz. The 'La Paz Waltz' tidal swinging applies here too - double swing room, no bow-and-stern, re-set weekly, anchor light required. The API daily anchoring fee applies as for the city anchorage. Longer dinghy ride to the Marina de La Paz dinghy dock (30 MXN/day or 600 MXN/month). Club Cruceros mentions occasional beach potlucks at the Magote.
