Cabo San Lucas Anchorage (Médano Beach)

22° 53.1′ N · 109° 53.9′ W · approximate

The free roadstead off Playa El Médano, just north-east of the harbor jetties, with El Arco in view - finish line of the Baja Ha-Ha and the cheapest way to stay in Cabo.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: placed about 400 m off the beach north-east of the harbor entrance (Noonsite gives the entrance as 22 52.88' N 109 54.14' W). A deep submarine canyon runs through the outer bay, so the anchorable sand shelf is narrow (about 2 nm long) and drops off steeply - set in sand and check your swing; cruise ships anchor in the deep middle (The Log). Good shelter in prevailing NW winds but wide open to south swell; leave for a marina or another anchorage when tropical systems threaten (hurricane season May 15-Nov 30). Wakes from pangas, water taxis and party boats make it rolly. A small anchoring fee is charged (Noonsite; the API port authority collects anchoring fees at Cabo San Lucas - verify locally). To land, either take a panga water taxi or run the dinghy through the busy, narrow harbor entrance to the marina dinghy dock. Ferry and water-taxi traffic runs to the beach - keep the lanes clear.
