C-55 Juan de la Barrera Wreck (Cancún)

21° 8.4′ N · 86° 44.1′ W · approximate

The C-58's sister minesweeper (ex-USS Ransom), sunk in 2000 off Cancún as an artificial reef. Wilma broke her into sections in 2005; loggerhead turtles and reef sharks live on her, and eagle rays school here in winter. It is usually paired with the C-58 on a two-tank wreck trip.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate and is NOT the wreck position: no published coordinate was found; it is a representative offshore point east of the Cancún hotel zone near the C-58. Depth about 22-25 m (72-82 ft); visibility often lower than on the C-58 (about 12 m / 40 ft per Scuba Total). Intermediate to advanced; current is common. Taste of Isla says the sinking was in 1999 and that only the stern is now intact enough to explore, while Scuba Total says 2000 - sources differ. Book through an Isla Mujeres or Cancún dive shop.
