White House Bay Anchorage

17° 15.0′ N · 62° 39.5′ W

The cruisers' favourite on St Kitts: a small, almost always calm bay on the Southeast Peninsula with sand-and-grass holding, wreck snorkelling off the beach and Salt Plage's sunset bar on the shore. Sailors say it sits flat even when Basseterre is rolling.

Practical

Anchor in about 5 m on sand and grass, good holding (ActiveCaptain); best holding is closer to shore - it gets rocky further out (The Moorings). In March 2024 a boat rode out a front here for a week with no roll and no dragging, though gusts howl down off the hills and odd eddies swing boats in different directions. Exposed to the north (noforeignland). All moorings are private. A tug wreck at the southern end lies only a few feet under water and is charted as exposed - keep clear. Salt Plage has a dinghy dock for customers only; otherwise beach the dinghy or use the Christophe Harbour marina dinghy dock (5-minute walk). Free Salt Plage Wi-Fi reaches the anchorage; Digicel LTE is good. Rubbish can be left at the marina for a fee. A small, pricey grocery and cafe at the marina; for a proper shop take a taxi or rental car to Frigate Bay. Snorkelling: the bay has a reputation as the best on St Kitts, with a sunken tugboat and an 18th-century British troop-ship wreck off the rocky beach (AFAR).

Best for
