Vervet Monkeys (St Kitts)

17° 14.7′ N · 62° 39.0′ W · approximate

St Kitts and Nevis are home to African green (vervet) monkeys, brought over on slave ships from West Africa in the late 17th century and now living wild in troops across both islands.

Practical

Position is a representative spot on the Southeast Peninsula between White House Bay and the Great Salt Pond, where troops are commonly seen; they occur island-wide. Wikipedia records their introduction to St Kitts, Nevis, St Martin and Barbados; they live in social groups of roughly 7 to 80. Cruisers report seeing wild monkeys near Fort Charles and at Golden Rock on Nevis (ActiveCaptain). Don't feed them, and keep hatches closed when anchored close to shore.
