The Quill Volcano Trail
17° 28.7′ N · 62° 57.6′ W
Climb Statia's 601 m dormant volcano on the Main Quill Trail through changing vegetation zones to the crater rim, then drop into the crater's rainforest of giant kapok and strangler figs - the island's signature hike.
Practical
Coordinates are the summit (Wikipedia). Main Quill Trail: 1.6 km one-way, 60-120 minutes, moderate; it starts above Oranjestad near the Quill National Park sign (OpenStreetMap 17.47670,-62.97551) at the end of Rosemary Laan. The Crater Trail descends inside the crater from the rim. US$10 annual nature fee per person (STENAPA). Start early to avoid the heat; carry at least 1.5 litres of water each. Last eruption about 1,600 years ago.
