Tank Bay & Ordnance Bay Anchorage (Inner English Harbour)

17° 0.6′ N · 61° 46.0′ W

The inner arms of English Harbour beyond the Dockyard quay, where mangroves and hills wrap around the water. Quieter than Freeman's Bay and the most sheltered water in the harbour.

Practical

Position is the OpenStreetMap named-bay node for Tank Bay; OSM also marks an anchorage in Ordnance Bay (about 17.0108 N, 61.7646 W). The Antigua Marine Guide says the main channel leads past Nelson's Dockyard Marina 'or further round into the sheltered Ordinance and Tank Bays'. ABYMA notes historic hurricane chains here: one in Tank Bay runs from the Clarence House jetty (now the Coast Guard station) to the Powder Magazine dock and is marked by a large mooring; two more run from Antigua Slipway, one west about 160 yards to an anchor on the beach and one north about 80 yards into the mangroves. Ask the Harbour Master before anchoring. Holding in the harbour 'can be poor, especially in bad weather' (Noonsite). National Parks fees apply. NPA conservation measures ask boats to use moorings where available, avoid sewage discharge and respect speed limits; motorized water sports are prohibited.
