Hurricane Season & Hurricane Holes (Antigua)

17° 0.6′ N · 61° 46.0′ W · approximate

The Atlantic hurricane season brushes Antigua every year; the island's natural harbours, above all English Harbour, were chosen by the Royal Navy in the 1720s precisely because ships there survived storms that wrecked those elsewhere.

Practical

Noonsite: hurricane season July to November (officially June 1 to November 30), with the rainy season September to November, coinciding with the peak. Traditional shelters: English Harbour (historic hurricane chains across the bottom; ask the Harbour Master), Falmouth Harbour, Jolly Harbour, Parham Harbour's mangrove hole (6 ft dredged entrance) and Ledcoff Cove in Nonsuch Bay ('Antigua's best hurricane hole', AMG). Many owners haul out instead: North Sound Marina (tie-downs, best hurricane storage per Noonsite), Jolly Harbour Boatyard, Catamaran Marina/Bailey's Boatyard (insurance-approved cradles and pits) and Antigua Slipway. Forecasts from the Antigua & Barbuda Meteorological Service; English Harbour cruisers' net 9 am on VHF 06. Insurers often require an approved hurricane plan.
