Government day moorings off Shoal Bay East inside the Shoal Bay-Island Harbour Marine Park, so you can swim from the boat to the reef and the beach.

Coordinate approx: off the beach (OpenStreetMap beach way 200860031); the reef is close inshore, so approach in good light and watch the water colour. Marine park: absolutely NO anchoring at Shoal Bay East; moorings are day use only, 6am-7pm, under the cruising permit (yellow buoys under 40 ft, white under 65 ft). On the north-east (Atlantic) coast, so exposed to northerly and north-easterly swell; the tourist board notes winter surf on the Atlantic side. From Road Bay it is about 9-10 nm east along the reef-strewn north coast, so plan a daylight round trip.
