Sandy Ground Salt Pond
18° 12.1′ N · 63° 5.2′ W
The large disused salt pond (Road Salt Pond) right behind Road Bay's beach. Salt from here was once a mainstay of Anguilla's economy, and the cliff-backed beach and pond together make Sandy Ground's setting.
Practical
A short walk from the dinghy dock along the beach road. Wading birds use the pond. No facilities. On 19 March 1969, British paratroops landed on the nearby beach during Operation Sheepskin.
Best for
A walk ashore and a bit of Anguilla history
