Romney Manor & Caribelle Batik
17° 19.5′ N · 62° 48.1′ W
A 17th-century plantation estate above Old Road, once owned by Thomas Jefferson's great-great-grandfather, where Caribelle Batik has made hand-dyed textiles since 1975 among tropical gardens.
Practical
Caribelle Batik is open Mon-Fri 9am-3pm, and Saturdays 9am-3pm from November to April only; closed Sundays (and Saturdays May-Oct). Watch batik demonstrations, or book the 'Back of House' tour to make your own piece. Phone (869) 465-6253. The estate was bought by Samuel Jefferson in 1625 and named after the Earl of Romney, who bought it in 1713; enslaved labour worked the plantation until 1834 (Wikipedia). Combine with the Wingfield petroglyphs and Old Road Rum distillery next door. Reach it by taxi or the west-coast bus to Old Road.
