Mount Liamuiga
17° 22.2′ N · 62° 48.0′ W
St Kitts' 3,792 ft dormant stratovolcano - the highest point in the Leeward Islands - climbed through farmland, rainforest and cloud forest to the rim of a half-mile-wide crater that holds a small lake.
Practical
Coordinates are the summit (Wikipedia). The trail starts near St Paul's on a rough access road and stops at the crater's western rim, not the true summit. About 6.4 km out and back with roughly 600 m of climbing, 4-5 hours round trip; steep, muddy and technical in places, with roots for ladders and fixed ropes on slick slopes (mountliamuiga.com). A guide is highly recommended - the trail is unmarked with intersecting paths. Start by 8 or 9am for cooler air and clearer views; the dry season (roughly Dec-Apr) is less muddy. Bring boots, 2 litres of water, rain gear and insect repellent. Cell coverage is limited. Best reached by taxi from Basseterre or Sandy Point.
