Rainy Season & Flash Flooding (Dominica)

15° 18.1′ N · 61° 23.3′ W · approximate

Dominica is one of the wettest islands in the Caribbean: the leeward coast gets about 1,800 mm of rain a year but the mountains up to 9,000 mm, and flash floods and landslides are a constant hazard - Tropical Storm Erika (Aug 2015) killed 30 people without even passing over the island.

Practical

Position approximate (Roseau). Wettest months June to October (Wikipedia; Noonsite weather), with Roseau's monthly peak in November (374 mm). Hikers: never cross or swim in rivers or gorges (Titou, Indian River, Chaudiere) during or after heavy rain; start long hikes early as the forest gets dark fast in the afternoon. Sailors: heavy rain brings river runoff, debris and poor visibility for diving along the lee coast; tap water is chlorinated but can run brown after storms (Wikivoyage). Erika dropped an island-wide average of 24 in (610 mm), with 31-33 in on Morne Diablotins.
