Lower Town (Statia)
17° 28.7′ N · 62° 59.2′ W
The single waterfront street of Oranjestad's Lower Town, lined with the ruins of 18th-century warehouses from the days when Statia was 'The Golden Rock', the busiest free port in the Caribbean - some of the ruins now lie underwater in the bay.
Practical
Coordinates from OpenStreetMap. The dive shops, STENAPA and harbour are all here, and the cobbled Slave Path climbs to Upper Town. The St Eustatius Historical Foundation's walking-tour booklet (about 1 mile) starts at the port. Snorkel the sunken sea wall and warehouse remains straight off the beach.
Best for
Strolling the ruins between the dinghy and Upper Town
