Charlestown Moorings

17° 8.5′ N · 62° 38.1′ W

The mooring field right off Charlestown's waterfront - the easy choice for clearing in, a walk round the Georgian town, the market and the museums.

Practical

NASPA moorings run along the west coast from Oualie Beach to Charlestown; call NASPA on VHF 16 for an assigned mooring within 24 hours of arrival, and no one may use a mooring without NASPA authorisation (naspakn.com). Mooring classes: up to 35 ft, 36-60 ft, 61-90 ft; vessels over 90 ft anchor in a designated area. Rates are published only as an image on NASPA's fee page, with surcharges of +25% weekdays 4:01pm-7:59am and all day Saturday and +50% on Sundays and public holidays. User reports (verify locally): about US$30 a week in 2016; a 2024 Noonsite report of a quoted US$25/night and that NASPA removes the moorings in the off-season (not yet back in Oct 2024), with anchoring prohibited while they are in. Pay at the Port Authority in Charlestown. ActiveCaptain: mooring use is required here; some moorings have been reported to slip in strong wind, so set a drag alarm. The approach is entirely open from the west. A SE swell can creep in; Cades Bay to the north is quieter. Dinghy dock just south of the ferry pier - heavy surge, so use a long painter or a stern anchor. A water spigot at chest height at the dinghy dock (bring a short hose); free rubbish bins at the south end of the ferry terminal. Someone may offer to 'watch' your dinghy. Free Wi-Fi outside the Customs office and at the ferry terminal; Four Seasons Wi-Fi reaches the moorings.
