Vog and Volcanic Air Quality
19° 24.3′ N · 155° 16.9′ W · approximate
When Kilauea is fountaining, sulfur dioxide and volcanic smog (vog) can drift across the island and out to sea - irritating eyes and lungs and cutting visibility.
Practical
Coordinate is the Halemaumau source (approx for this hazard). The NPS warns that volcanic gases can be hazardous, especially for sensitive groups, and says to check air quality before and during a visit. Falling tephra (volcanic glass) near the summit can damage eyes - wear eye protection.
