Chain of Craters Road
19° 19.7′ N · 155° 11.4′ W
A 19-mile paved road dropping from the summit past old craters to the sea cliffs, with the Puu Loa petroglyph field near the bottom; it now dead-ends at the 1990s lava.
Practical
Coordinate from to-hawaii's map. Puu Loa petroglyphs: about 1.5 miles round trip on a boardwalk past mile marker 16 (to-hawaii) - stay on the boardwalk. HOLEI SEA ARCH IS GONE: the 90-ft arch at the end of the road collapsed between September 23 and 27, 2026 during Hurricane Nolo; NPS confirmed October 1 (Wikipedia). Four people have fallen to their deaths from the cliffs here in the past decade. No services along the road - fuel and water up first.
