Kilauea Iki Trail
19° 24.9′ N · 155° 14.9′ W · approximate
The park's best day hike: down through rainforest onto the floor of a crater whose lava lake erupted in 1959 with fountains near 1,900 ft, then across the steaming crust and back up.
Practical
Coordinate approximate (near the Kilauea Iki Overlook, placed between the Nahuku lava tube and the summit). Per NPS: 3.3-mile loop from Kilauea Iki Overlook (2 to 3 hours; overlook parking extremely limited); 5.3 miles round trip from the Kilauea Visitor Center (3 to 4 hours); 6 miles from Devastation Trailhead (4 to 5 hours). Steep and rocky, 400 ft down and up. Add Nahuku lava tube from the overlook.
