Shark Fin Rock (Kaunolu)

20° 44.3′ N · 156° 58.1′ W

A big fin-shaped rock off the sea cliffs at Kaunolu, King Kamehameha the Great's old fishing village on Lanai's southwest point, a favorite day snorkel stop for Maui charter boats.

Practical

Coast Pilot 10: Shark Fin Rock is about 0.3 mile north-northwest of Palaoa Point, at 20°44'15"N, 156°58'08"W; Palaoa Point Light stands on the east prong of the double point, and between the double points is a small rocky bight where small boats can usually land in trade-wind weather. Trilogy runs its Lanai Adventure Snorkel here on most days (from Lahaina) and goes to Club Lanai when Kaunolu is not snorkelable. Deep water close to the cliffs; currents along the south coast are reported to be weak. Day stop only.

Best for

A wall-and-pinnacle snorkel under the Kaunolu cliffs

Season

Trade-wind days; exposed to south swell
