Reeds Bay Anchorage

19° 43.6′ N · 155° 3.7′ W · approximate

A small, shallow bay on the Banyan Drive (Waiakea) side of Hilo Bay, where local sailboats lie at anchor off Reeds Bay Beach Park and the cold spring-fed Ice Pond at its head.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: set between Reeds Bay Beach Park (to-hawaii map 19.72544, -155.06091) and the two USCG 'ROCK' daybeacons A and B in Reeds Bay (19-43-40.8N 155-03-40.3W and 19-43-38.9N 155-03-40.2W) - those mark rocks; give them a wide berth. The south side of Hilo Bay is a federal special anchorage area (33 CFR 110.129); limits are given in the regulation (Old Hawaiian Datum). The western edge of the bay is man-made fill from 1925-30 harbor dredging (to-hawaii). DLNR DOBOR administers anchoring outside the DOT harbor; get the current permit and fee position from the DOBOR Hawaii District office ((808) 327-3690 per the area overview) before settling in - older cruiser reports of a required DLNR anchoring permit date from 2012-13. Shallow: check depth for your draft. Close to Ken's House of Pancakes and the Banyan Drive hotels. DOBOR lists Reeds Bay as a state facility with 25 moorings, managed from the Wailoa Sampan Basin office (75 Aupuni Street, Suite 210, (808) 933-0414); no fuel, water or other amenities are listed.
