Pelekunu Valley Anchorage
21° 9.9′ N · 156° 52.9′ W
A deep, steep-walled North Shore bay at the mouth of Pelekunu Valley, between Haupu Bay and the headlands toward Wailau, backed by waterfalls and some of the wettest rainforest in the islands.
Practical
Coordinate is the USGS GNIS position for Pelekunu Bay. No published anchoring soundings were found; approach slowly in a summer calm and anchor on sand clear of the boulder shore. Mokolea Rock, over which the sea always breaks, lies 0.6 mile northeast of Pahu Point to the west, and Mokohola Island (20 ft) is 0.3 mile off Umilehi Point (Coast Pilot 10). No landing facilities; boulder beach and surf. Strictly a calm-weather stop; leave at the first sign of north swell.
Best for
Settled-weather exploration of the North Shore valleys
