Maui Nui Humpback Whale Season
20° 42.0′ N · 156° 30.0′ W · approximate
Every winter thousands of North Pacific humpbacks come to calve and breed in the warm, shallow channels between Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe; from a boat off Kihei or Makena you hear them singing through the hull.
Practical
Approx: a representative point in Maalaea Bay / Alalakeiki Channel inside the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Season November to April. Keep 100 yards from humpbacks; slow down and post a lookout, since mothers and calves rest at the surface and strikes injure whales and boats. Humpbacks have been seen inside Molokini's cove in winter. Entanglement hotline (888) 256-9840 or VHF 16.
