Mamalu Bay Anchorage (Kaupo)

20° 37.7′ N · 156° 7.1′ W · approximate

The bay below Kaupo village and the great U of Kaupo Gap, where the Coast Pilot gives a sand-bottom trade-wind anchorage off a coast of ranch land, old churches and waterfalls.

Practical

Approx: plotted off Kaupo hamlet (OpenStreetMap) from the Coast Pilot description; check depth on arrival. Coast Pilot: Kailio Point, 13 miles SW of Kauiki Head, is 73 ft high at the east end of Mamalu Bay; trade-wind anchorage about 300 yards from the head of the bay in 10 fathoms, sandy bottom. Kaupo Gap is a good landmark day or night. Kaupo Landing (11 miles SW of Kauiki Head) is the best landing in the vicinity in trade-wind weather; anchor well off and east of it; strong east winds make landing difficult. Exposed to south swell. Ashore: Kaupo General Store and Huialoha Church.
