Nuu Landing Anchorage

20° 37.4′ N · 156° 10.8′ W · approximate

A small bight in the lee of black, jagged Apole Point at the seaward end of the Kaupo lava flow, the last possible stop on Maui's wild southeast coast before the 12-mile run of anchorage-free lava to Cape Hanamanioa.

Practical

Approx: plotted just inside Nuu Bay (OpenStreetMap feature) on the west side of Apole Point. Coast Pilot: small vessels can find anchorage in depths of about 8 fathoms; there are no suitable anchorages between Nuu Landing and Cape Hanamanioa. Open to the south: use only in settled trade-wind weather with no south swell. No services; a gravel road (Piilani Highway, Route 31) passes above. Remote: no cell coverage to count on.

Best for

A settled-weather lunch stop on the southeast coast run

Season

Settled trades only; untenable in south swell or kona winds
