Kipahulu (Pools of Oheo, Haleakala National Park)

20° 39.7′ N · 156° 2.4′ W · approximate

The coastal district of Haleakala National Park, 12 miles past Hana, where Oheo Gulch tumbles in a chain of pools to the sea and the Pipiwai Trail climbs through a roaring bamboo forest to 400-foot Waimoku Falls.

Practical

Approx: Kuloa Point (OpenStreetMap), on the loop trail overlooking the pools; Waimoku Falls is at about 20.6793, -156.0569. The Pools of Oheo are closed to entry for safety but can be viewed from the Kuloa Point Trail. Entrance fee (NPS): $30 per private vehicle or $15 per person on foot or bicycle, valid 3 days (covers the summit too); $55 annual pass; pay by credit card. Drive-up camping at Kipahulu Campground (wet, remote). No gas or food in the park; emergency medical help is at least an hour away. From the water: Kipahulu is an exposed coast, so visit by road from a Hana or Kahului base rather than by anchoring. Charles Lindbergh's grave is at Palapala Hoomau Church just south of the park.
