Alau Island

20° 43.7′ N · 155° 58.7′ W · approximate

A grass-topped islet with a few coconut palms 1.5 miles south of Kauiki Head, a seabird islet and a key mark (and hazard) for boats rounding Maui's eastern tip.

Practical

Approx: centre of the islet's OpenStreetMap coastline outline; Coast Pilot places it 1.5 miles south of Kauiki Head and 0.4 mile offshore (100 yards across, 150 ft high). An extensive reef lies between the island and Maui. Two rocks with about 9 ft over them lie about 0.7 mile SE of the island; they seldom show and do not break in moderate seas: give Alau Island about 1.5 miles berth. Strong NE current off the island and an eddy between it and Kauiki Head.
