Mahaulepu Heritage Trail

21° 52.5′ N · 159° 26.3′ W · approximate

A wild coastal walk east from Shipwreck Beach toward the undeveloped Mahaulepu coast and the Makauwahi Cave sinkhole - Hawaii's largest limestone cave and one of its richest fossil sites.

Practical

Coordinate is the trail's start at Shipwreck Beach (USGS GNIS, approx). Coast Pilot: Makawehi Bluff stands on the east side of Shipwreck Beach, which fronts a conspicuous green-roofed hotel. Makauwahi Cave (21.88833, -159.41889) is reached through a sinkhole; it was slated to close to the public in 2024 for lack of funding, with ownership passing to Grove Farm - confirm access before you go. The coast supports monk seals and green turtles. Trail length and hours could not be verified from an official source; check locally. Carry water.
