Kalalau Beach Anchorage

22° 10.5′ N · 159° 39.7′ W · approximate

An open summer roadstead off the half-mile beach at the mouth of Kalalau Valley, the biggest amphitheatre of cliffs on the coast - a lunch or calm-night stop with a view few people see from the water.

Practical

Coordinate is set about 450 m offshore (northwest) of the USGS GNIS position for Kalalau Beach (approx); no published depth or holding data was found - sound in carefully, the bottom drops off quickly along Na Pali (Noodle's Notes). Fully exposed to north and northwest swell; summer only and only in settled trades. Landing rules: kayak landings at Kalalau are allowed only with a valid State Parks camping permit and only May 15 to September 7; commercial drop-offs at Kalalau are illegal; camping without a permit can lead to confiscation of the vessel. Do not swim ashore if surf is running; State Parks does not recommend ocean swimming at Kalalau for people unfamiliar with conditions. Do not loiter under the waterfall or cliffs (rockfall). Status (State Parks notices, October 19, 2026): Na Pali and Polihale were closed for Hurricane Lowell from September 4, 2026; Haena State Park reopened October 15, 2026, but all Kauai camping remained closed and Kokee Road was closed until further notice - check the Park Notices page before relying on any landing or camping plan.
