Haena Keyhole Anchorage (Makua Reef)
22° 13.5′ N · 159° 33.7′ W
A spectacular keyhole of deep water inside the Makua reef at Haena, completely protected by the reef - but daylight-only under state rules and dropped from Noodle's Notes' recommended list.
Practical
Noodle's Notes GPS 22-13.5N 159-33.7W: 15 ft, hard pan with some sand; entrance on the western side of the reef just off the beach; protected, but at high tide chop over the reef at the Tunnels surf break makes it rolly; use plenty of chain. HAR 13-256-40 permits anchoring/mooring in Haena ocean waters during daylight hours only, and not on coral. The anchorage lies within the Haena CBSFA (2015): no entry to the Makua Puuhonua refuge, gear limited to two lines and four hooks per person, species and bag limits. The guide's author reports a hostile reception from some residents in 2020 and no longer recommends it. Check chart and satellite imagery before entering; summer only.
Best for
Daytime stop for Tunnels in calm summer weather
Season
Summer only, no north swell; daylight only
