Haena Community-Based Subsistence Fishing Area and Makua Puuhonua
22° 13.7′ N · 159° 33.6′ W · approximate
Hawaii's first community-based subsistence fishing area covers the waters off Haena out to a mile, with a small no-entry marine refuge (the Makua Puuhonua) inside the Tunnels lagoon.
Practical
HAR 13-60.8 (effective August 14, 2015): the CBSFA runs from the Haena/Na Pali state park boundary to the Haena/Wainiha boundary and one mile offshore. No commercial take or sale of marine life from the area. Gear and bag limits apply (see rule); possession of fishing gear is allowed on a vessel in active transit seaward of the Vessel Transit Boundary (roughly 1,000-2,300 ft offshore). Nobody may enter the Makua Puuhonua without a special activity permit from the Board. Coordinate is the approximate centroid of the Puuhonua polygon given in the rule (22-13-34N to 22-13-45N, 159-33-32W to 159-33-45W).
