Hanalei River Dinghy Trip and Landing
22° 12.8′ N · 159° 29.8′ W · approximate
The Hanalei River empties into the east corner of the bay beside the pier and is the best dinghy landing in the bay and a lovely paddle: you can work about three miles upriver past taro country before the vegetation closes in.
Practical
Coordinate approximates the river mouth from the Coast Pilot description (pier is 200 yards south of the river) and the pier's Wikipedia position. Coast Pilot: navigable for shallow-draft boats 2-3 miles; a privately dredged channel passes close to the reef on the northeast side of the bay to the mouth; at high water 4.5 ft can be carried over the bar and about 4 ft to the bridge 1.8 miles up; overhead cables with 27 ft clearance cross the mouth; a launch ramp on the south bank 0.1 mile inside. Slow-no-wake on the river (HAR 13-256-39). Noodle's Notes: the entrance is marked, follow local traffic; land by the canoe houses on the south side just inside the entrance and lock dinghy and engine (theft history). Ingress/egress Zone 2 crosses the river mouth to Black Pot Park.
