Diamond Head Lighthouse
21° 15.3′ N · 157° 48.6′ W
The white concrete lighthouse at the foot of Diamond Head, first lit in 1899 with the present tower from 1917, marking the eastern approach to Honolulu and the Transpac finish.
Practical
Position from Coast Pilot 10 (21-15-21N, 157-48-34W). Light 147 ft above water on a 64 ft white concrete tower near the beach; group occulting (2) every 10 s, nominal range 14 nm (state lighthouse layer); a lighted buoy is moored in 150 ft of water 0.6 mile off the light. Currents up to 1 knot setting in various directions have been noted about 3 miles southwest. Night caution: vessels from the east have mistaken Makapuu Point Light for Diamond Head Light and grounded on the reef west of Koko Head. The keeper's residence is a private Coast Guard home; view from Diamond Head Road. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
