Ahupuaa o Kahana State Park
21° 32.8′ N · 157° 52.6′ W
Hawaii's only public ahupuaa, a complete traditional land division running from the reef to 2,670-ft Puu Pauao, with family-friendly trails through one of Oahu's wettest valleys.
Practical
Two trails, neither requiring a permit: the Kapaeleele Koa and Keaniani Lookout loop (about 1 mile, roughly an hour) and the longer Nakoa Trail into the valley. Parts of the valley average nearly 300 inches of rain a year, so expect mud and stream crossings; mosquitoes. Huilua Fishpond at the stream mouth holds mullet and milkfish; endangered Hawaiian coot and gallinule in the lower valley. Walk up from Kahana Bay Beach Park.
Best for
A rainforest walk straight from a Kahana Bay landing
Season
Year-round; muddy after rain
