Spetses Karnagia (Traditional Boatyards, Baltiza)

37° 15.6′ N · 23° 10.0′ E · approximate

Along the foreshore of Baltiza creek, Spetses shipwrights still build and repair wooden caiques on open slipways — an open-air museum of the yards that launched Bouboulina's Agamemnon and almost half the 1821 revolutionary fleet.

Practical

Coordinate approx: the head of the Old Harbour inner creek, where the yards sit around the inner harbour (Noonsite; OSM shoreline). Walk from Dapia along the coast road past the captains' mansions to the Old Harbour; the yards are downhill past the Nektarios and Minas tavernas (Poseidonion). Several yards still work, building traditional caiques and repairing boats from small fishing boats to large recreational vessels; shipwright Pantelis, son of Dinos, opened his yard in 1979 and has built more than 200 vessels. By 1868 Spetses was Greece's second shipbuilding centre after Syros. Look but do not wander under hulls on cradles; the shipbuilders also work together on the Armata effigy ship for the September festival (Poseidonion).
