Nikopolis Ancient City

39° 0.5′ N · 20° 44.0′ E

'Victory City', founded by Octavian (Augustus) to celebrate his defeat of Antony and Cleopatra at Actium in 31 BC. Its huge site holds walls, a theatre, odeon, stadium, nymphaeum, baths and Byzantine basilicas with mosaics, a few kilometres north of Preveza.

Practical

Wikipedia: the theatre has 77 rows of seats, and the stadium hosted the Actian Games. The philosopher Epictetus taught here from AD 90. Aktio Marina's site lists the monument of Augustus, which once held the bronze rams of Antony's ships, and the north baths. About 7 km north of Preveza: taxi or hire car from the marinas. Bring water and a hat; there is little shade. Opening hours and tickets are not confirmed in these sources.
