Maistro Afternoon Wind (Inland Sea)

38° 40.8′ N · 20° 46.8′ E · approximate

The summer maistro (mistral) is the engine of Ionian sailing: calm mornings, then a NW breeze of 10-25 knots that fills in around midday and dies at dusk — but inside the Inland Sea it is bent and funnelled by Lefkada's mountains.

Practical

Sailingissues.com: the maistro gets up around midday and blows consistently at 10-25 knots from the NW; in the Inland Sea it can be deflected so that it blows from the N, W or even SW-S in places, with strong gusts in the lee of high land and accelerations round capes and through channels. Between Kastos and Kalamos expect strong funnelled NE or SW winds; the Kalamos strait is notorious for violent gusts in NW conditions; Vasiliki Bay, Atokos and Ithaca's east coast also get dangerous gusts. Plan passages for the morning, arrive at popular harbours early in the afternoon, and reef before entering Sivota or Vasiliki. Coordinate is the centre of the Inland Sea (approx).
