Leonidio (Plaka Harbour)
37° 8.8′ N · 22° 53.6′ E
Plaka is the little harbour of Leonidio, a Tsakonian town wedged under huge red cliffs 4 km up the Dafnon valley — waterfront fish tavernas, a pebble beach and the gateway to Greece's top climbing destination.
Practical
Coordinate is the mapped harbour (OSM); Sea-Seek waypoint 37°08.74'N 22°53.60'E. Hard to pick out from a distance (Sea-Seek). Moor to the mole; space is limited. Sailing Issues: sheltered except in SE sirocco (midwinter to early spring); in summer the meltemi blows from due N; a freshwater current flows south inside the basin; use plenty of scope; an old sunken mooring chain lies near the beach — tripline advised; parts of the pier are shallow. Sea-Seek adds that the prevailing S–SE day breeze sets up a cross-swell at the entrance and an uncomfortable surge inside, and that the port can be untenable in S gales. Leonidio town is 4 km upstream, about 7 minutes by taxi (Sailing Issues). Tavernas at Plaka: Fisherman's Tavern, Dolphin, Michael & Margaret, Ammos (OSM).
