Ionian Dolphin Project Volunteer Expeditions
38° 37.8′ N · 20° 51.0′ E · approximate
The Tethys Research Institute's citizen-science programme lets non-scientists join daily dolphin and monk-seal surveys in the Ionian, a chance to learn the local animals before cruising among them.
Practical
Over 1,500 volunteers have joined in three decades. Volunteers go out on daily sea surveys and, back at the station, help download data and process photos for photo-identification. The field station is in Vonitsa on the southern shore of the Ambracian Gulf (outside this subregion; see the Paxos, Parga & Preveza subregion). Dates and fees are on the Tethys 'Join us' pages; check there. The project also asks sailors to report dolphin and monk seal sightings via its website. Coordinate is the Inland Sea study area (approx).
