Port Leone (Kalamos)

38° 36.0′ N · 20° 53.1′ E

A wide, sheltered bay on Kalamos's south-east coast below the ghost village of Kefali (Porto Leone), abandoned after the 1953 earthquake; only its church is kept up.

Practical

Coordinate is the sailingissues.com waypoint (38 35.950 N, 20 53.150 E). Sailingissues: anchor off the north or south beaches, or (the author's favourite) east of the two derelict windmills; good holding, aquamarine water. The Port Leone bar is out of business and the jetty is now private; pilgrims visit the church on June 30 and August 15. my-sea: well protected from most winds but open to NE; low-draught boats can moor at the semi-derelict pier, with stones in the water in front of it. The village, church and old olive press are free to wander. The water supply was destroyed in the 1953 earthquake.
