Gerakas Beach

37° 42.3′ N · 20° 59.0′ E

A long, wide curve of sand at the southern tip of the Vasilikos peninsula, ending in pale clay cliffs. It is the main loggerhead nesting beach on the peninsula, and the Zante Sea Turtle Rescue & Information Centre is 100 m from it.

Practical

The waters off the nesting beaches fall in the park's restricted zones (Zone A is closed to boats 1 May–31 October; check the zone map before approaching), so visit on foot from Porto Roma, about 1 km by road. Beach rules: open 7am to sunset (zanteisland.com says closed from half an hour before sunset to half an hour after dawn); stay within 5 m of the waterline; sunbeds are removed each night; no vehicles, dogs off-leash, horses or lights at night. The clay headland at the end is closed because visitors eroded it. Tavernas, a mini-market and an ATM are by the car park (OpenStreetMap). Hatchlings can sometimes be seen at dawn from May to October.
