Dokos Ancient Wreck
37° 21.0′ N · 23° 20.6′ E · approximate
Possibly the oldest known shipwreck in the world: a cargo of hundreds of Early Helladic clay vases (around 2700–2200 BC) found off Dokos by Peter Throckmorton in 1975.
Practical
Coordinate approx: the 'Wreck Cove' (Agios Ioannis) where sailingissues says the wreck was found; the exact site is not published. The cargo lies at about 15–30 m; only the pottery survives (no hull), along with stone anchors, lead ingots and millstones. The Hellenic Institute of Marine Archaeology excavated it in 1989–1992 and recovered more than 15,000 sherds and artefacts, now in the Spetses Museum. The waters are an archaeological park — no diving or anchoring on the site is described as permitted; treat it as protected.
