Mediterranean tropical-like cyclones ('medicanes') can hit the Ionian in autumn. Ianos struck on 17–18 September 2020 with gusts of about 195 km/h on Kefalonia, record rainfall (644.7 mm), strong surges on Kefalonia and Ithaca and a state of emergency.
