Vathy (Astypalaia)

36° 37.2′ N · 26° 23.7′ E

A fjord-like inlet on Astypalaia's remote north-east coast, almost landlocked behind a narrow entrance, with a tiny hamlet and a taverna. It is the island's best all-round shelter.

Practical

MarinaTips: about 6 m, sand and mud, excellent holding. A small quay lets you moor stern-to directly in front of the taverna. Its description says Vathy gives excellent shelter from all winds, though its rating advises avoiding strong N and NE, which can gust through the gap. Very remote: the hamlet is 21 km from Chora (Greeka). Boats leave from Vathy for Drakospilia, the Dragon's Cave (Greeka). No shops; arrive provisioned.

Best for

Bombproof overnight and the Dragon's Cave

Season

All summer; gusty in strong N–NE
