Anchorage· Kalymnos· Greece — Dodecanese, Sporades & North Aegean

Vathi Fjord (Kalymnos)

36° 58.4′ N · 27° 1.8′ E

A narrow, cliff-walled inlet on the east coast that snakes in to the hamlet of Rina at the foot of a valley of mandarin and lemon groves. It is the most dramatic stop on Kalymnos.

Practical

Go stern-to the short mole on the east side; the west side is too shallow and there is little to tie to. Or drop the anchor as close to the opposite cliffs as you dare, since depths rise quickly, and run long shore lines. Sources give 5–12 m inside on sand and heavy weed; make sure the anchor is through the weed and not just caught on roots. Shelter from the meltemi is excellent, but very strong gusts come down the hills. The entrance and harbour are very narrow, so manoeuvre with care. Keep the head of the inlet and the main wall clear for excursion boats; if you arrive late you can go stern-to the main wall, but leave before the day-trippers arrive (around 10am). A local sponge seller often directs yachts into berths. About 10 quay places per a recent skipper report. No beach, so wear shoes ashore.

Best for

The signature anchorage of Kalymnos; meltemi shelter

Season
